Gevo’s commercialization efforts are focused on isobutanol, a naturally occurring four carbon alcohol. Isobutanol is an important platform chemical with broad applications in large chemicals and fuels markets and a “drop-in” product that should allow customers to replace petroleum-derived raw materials with isobutanol-derived raw materials without modification to their equipment or production processes. Because isobutanol can drop into existing infrastructure, it should provide for easy integration into existing refining and petrochemical production processes.

Gevo’s isobutanol has successfully cleared registration with the U.S. EPA as a fuel additive, is the first isobutanol to be listed in the EPA’s Fuel Registration Directory and is now approved for blending with gasoline.

Isobutanol advantages…

We believe that the chemical properties and low cost production technology of our isobutanol provides many advantages over petroleum-based products.

  • It is a naturally occurring alcohol that we believe can be produced economically at large scale via a dedicated fermentation process and efficient separation strategy.
  • Gevo’s isobutanol, and the products that are produced from it, will be chemically equivalent to those produced from petroleum-based raw materials, except they will contain carbon from renewable sources.
  • Isobutanol’s chemical composition and physical properties should make it an ideal biofuel choice for refiners.
  • We anticipate that the use of our isobutanol will develop rapidly because the technology to convert isobutanol into a variety of hydrocarbon products is known and practiced in the chemicals industry today.
